What is Solar Net Metering?

A net-metered solar photovoltaic system produces electricity which you consume in your business.

Every kWh of solar electricity you generate is a kWh you don’t need to buy from the local utility.

By sending excess solar energy back to the grid, businesses receive credits that offset future energy costs, making net metering a smart choice for those looking to reduce operational expenses.

We use the electricity grid as a ‘battery’ to store energy when you produce more solar electricity than you consume. When your solar system produces more energy than you consume, the surplus is sent to the grid.

Solar-generated electricity you feed to the grid is credited against your future consumption, and you pay the utility on a ‘net metered’ basis – for your consumption from the grid, less whatever you generate.

Net Metering for Business Owners : A Superior Investment

Solar net metering can generate a return of + 25%.
Tax savings combine with electricity cost savings to generate a faster ROI.
  • Every kWh you generate is a kWh you don’t pay the utility for.
  • 30% of the capital cost of the solar project can now be deducted from your Taxes Payable via the Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit.
  • 75% of the balance of those capital costs can be depreciated in a single tax year. This reduced your taxable income.
  • The balance of capital costs are written down on a declining balance basis, 50% for manufacturing facilities, and 30% for all other facilities.
  • Solar power generation also reduces your carbon footprint, and helps achieve corporate sustainability goals.
  • There is a substantial ‘goodwill’ component to solar power generation. Consumers, upstream clients and the general public support renewable energy.

How is Solar Net Metering a Strong Investment?

Tax savings combine with electricity cost savings.

30% of the capital costs of the solar generation system are deducted from your Taxes Payable under the Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit.

75% of the capital costs for a solar PV system can be written off in a single tax year under the Canada Revenue Agency’s Accelerated Depreciation plan.

The balance of the capital costs are written off at 50% per year for manufacturers, and 30% per year for all other facilities, on a declining balance basis.

A solar PV system generates electricity cost savings for decades.

Why Choose Alectric Renewables?

Alectric Renewables has been operating as a solar developer and EPC since April 2015.

At  4.7MW in size, we’ve built the largest rooftop solar installation in Canada – and our experience speaks to our reliability on quality solar systems.

Each member of its corporate leadership has at least 14 years of experience in the solar industry, and several have more than 20.

With over 150MW of solar panels installed, our combined 62+ years expertise in net metering ensures your business receives a solar system that meets your expectations and delivers a return on your investment.

Our Net Metering Process

From evaluation to installation, Alectric Renewables handles all aspects of the project.
  1. Request a free solar evaluation of your property.
  2. We invite you to a Zoom call consultation.
  3. We physically visit the installation site.
  4. A comprehensive sales proposal is prepared with a 25 year project cash flow. This and entirely free proposal takes the form of a mini ‘engineering study’ with a market value of $15,000.
  5. We undertake all engineering work, structural, racking and electrical.
  6. We apply for all building permits, ESA and utility interconnection.
  7. Alectric Renewables builds and energizes the project and closes all permits.
  8. Ongoing monitoring to ensure performance.

Solar Net Metering Projects

Alectric Renewables has a decade of large-scale solar net metering project experience. Here are just a few of our past projects.

Canada's Largest Rooftop Solar Installation (4.7 MW)

Alectric Renewables installed a 4.7 MW solar net metering project in GTA, the largest rooftop solar installation in Canada.

Johnson & Johnson (544 kW)

Alectric Renewables’ designed, supplied and installed the 544 KW rooftop solar project at Johnson & Johnson’s Canada headquarters. The project will generate approximately 560,000 kWh per year, and provide approximately 23% of the annual electricity needs of the entire complex.

Beech House (72KW BIPV System)

Alectric Renewables completed a 72 kW Building-Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) system at Beech House, expertly integrating solar panels into the building’s south facade. Our invisible solar racking solution was the only one that met the architect’s specifications.

This installation produces 90,000 kWh of clean energy each year reducing carbon emissions by 1.2 tons.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of businesses can benefit from net metering?

Net metering is ideal for any business which uses more than 150,000 kWh per year in its operations, especially those in manufacturing, warehousing, and larger corporate office spaces.

Is solar power a good investment?

The return on investment for solar power improves with economies of scale. As systems get larger, the installed cost of every KW of generation capacity decreases, up to a point. Systems 150KW and larger can make economic sense.

Can I sell electricity back to the grid at a premium price?

No. But if you use electricity in your business, you can generate electricity from solar panels installed on your building and use this electricity in your business. The value per delivered kWh ranges from about 11 to 15 cents.

Are there any government incentives?

Yes. All are tax incentives. There are no capital cost subsidies per se. The Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit provides a deduction of 30% of the capital cost of the solar project from Taxes Payable. The balance of the system can be written off at an accelerated rate, which reduces your Taxable Income.

Can my roof support the weight of solar panels?

Probably yes. All commercial buildings are designed with a certain amount of structural ‘reserve capacity’ under the Ontario Building Code. A site visit can reveal potential points of concern. We undertake a structural engineering analysis of the building which is used to support a Building Permit with the local municipality.

What if I need to replace my roof?

We only install solar panels on roofs which are in good repair, and which should not need to be replaced within the next ten years, at a minimum. If your roof needs to be replaced – we do that too! It’s good to combine a roof replacement and a solar energy installation.

Do I have to wash the solar panels or clean snow off solar panels in winter?

No. The rain cleans dirt and dust from solar panels periodically. Our energy model takes losses due to soiling and due to snowfall into account. If one were to pay for labor to wash dust from modules or sweep snow from modules, the labor cost would exceed the value of excess energy delivered.

Do solar systems work in the winter?

Yes. Solar generation systems produce at their maximum design capacity in the summer months, and less when the days are shorter, and when the sun is lower in the sky. When there is a snow fall, the systems will not generate electricity. But sunshine melts snow off solar panels, and they begin to generate electricity again.

How long does it take?

A solar project typically takes about 12 months to develop. Between three to six months can be spent in engineering and waiting for the permission of the local utility to connect to the grid. Installation times vary, based on the size of the system. Final inspections and obtaining permission to generate can also take a couple of months. Project development times vary depending on the local utility and municipality.

What warranties do you offer?

There are several warranties. Alectric Renewables offers a 5 year Workmanship Warranty, conditional upon a 5 Year Operations and Maintenance Agreement. Otherwise, we offer a 1 year warranty on workmanship. Solar PV modules now have a 30 year performance guarantee, and a 12 year manufacturer’s warranty covering manufacturer’s defects. Solar inverters and solar racking systems have a ten year product warranty.

Will solar panels damage my roof?

No. Most of our systems on flat roofs are entirely ballasted. The solar racking – the steel and aluminum structure the solar panels are attached to – simply sits on a set of rubber pads, which sit on the roof membrane. Concrete ballast blocks weigh down the system to reduce wind uplift. We avoid penetrating roofs with roof anchors. When we do need to penetrate a roof membrane, a qualified roofing contractor always seals the penetration and warranties the work.
